I’ve got a buddy who apparently thinks every shot is a good one, no matter the outcome.
Perfect drive down the middle?
“Good Swing, nice shot”
Duff an easy chip?
“Good effort, could be worse”
Miss the green all together?
“Hey! Good place to miss!”
You play with him once or twice and you might think it’s sarcasm. Play with him every week and it starts to seep into your brain.
Good Swing, nice shot. It makes you see things a bit different.
It could be hyperbole, sure, but also maybe not. Maybe the little misses aren’t so bad. At the end of the day, as a recreational golfer what’s the difference between a 83 and 86? Absolutely nothing.
What’s the difference between leaving the course happy and satisfied with your round and leaving frustrated? Everything.
I think he’s on to something. In all reality I have only a small ability to control where my ball goes. I have 100% control over weather it makes me happy or not.
It starts to creep into other areas of life. Not the best day at work? Nice place to miss. Could be worse.
Screw up a house project? Hey, good effort!
I don’t remember too many shots of all the rounds I’ve played with him, but this stuck with me.
Good Swing. Nice Shot.
